There are many self-guided Fall color tours in our area. You can travel the countryside at your own pace and stop when you desire. We've listed a couple routes here to give you some ideas.

50 Mile Fall Color Driving Tour

To begin, make a left out of our parking lot on to Highway 2. Travel about 5 miles to Lake Road in Ironwood (Walgreens). Take Lake Road north (right). After 15 miles, you enter the Gogebic County Forest and begin a drive downhill towards Lake Superior. Don't miss filling up your water bottles at the spring water tap halfway down the hill (on left). When the road reaches Lake Superior, stretch your legs and listen to the waves at Little Girls Point beach. Lake Road will continue to the west. Be sure to stop at Superior Falls (on right) before you cross the Montreal River. There is viewing at the top of the falls and a trail leading to the bottom of the falls. Continue west into Wisconsin and you will see signs for Saxon Harbor... another great stop. You will eventually intersect Highway 2. Turn left on to Highway 2 to return.

150 Mile Fall Color Driving Tour

This tour takes you to some of the most spectacular scenery in the Midwest. Start by making a right out of our parking lot on to Highway 2. Pass through Wakefield and continue east through the heart of the Ottawa National Forest. At the intersection of Highway 2 & Highway 45 in Watersmeet, go north (left). In Paulding, you will see signs for Bond Falls, which is worth a stop. Continue north on 45 to Ontonagon where you have a choice of restaurants for lunch. From here, take M64 west along the shores of Lake Superior all the way to M-107 and Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains State Park. Do NOT skip the Lake of the Clouds vista! From the park entrance, follow the South Boundary Road through the park. You will pass the Visitors Center, which has a wealth of information about park activities and trails. At the end of South Boundary Road, go north (right) on Highway 519 for 1 mile to the end of the road. There is a long boardwalk which follows the Presque Isle River to Lake Superior. If you brought wine and cheese, this is the place to enjoy it. Be sure to cross the suspension bridge to the small island at the mouth of the river. To return, take 519 south to M28 west (right) to Highway 2 west (right).
